River Boats topple Pony Express 14-9 in Hansen Bowl
West Virginia Wesleyan quarterback Adam Neugebauer earned the Craig Burroughs’ Most Valuable Player Award when he rallied the River Boats to a 14-9 victory over the Pony Express in the Hansen Bowl for small college senior all-stars in Virginia Beach, VA on January 16, 2012, Nuegebauer completed seven of 14 aerial attempts for 70 yards and the first six-pointer of the game.

Trailing 9-0, Neugebauer put the River Boats on the board 11 seconds into the fourth quarter when he connected on a 21-yard TD strike to Brandon James of Lake Erie. Bill Daniels of Kean converted the PAT. With 6:55 remaining on the game clock, James Suozzo of Merrimack College delivered a 12-yard pass to James Saros of Penn who raced into the end zone to put the River Boats into the lead for the first time. Daniels split the uprights with the final point of the contest that was decided with six seconds remaining when the River Boats “D” unit stopped the Pony Espress on a fourth and goal at the three.
Selected the Defensive Player of the Game by a panel of pro scouts and certified pro football agents along with members of the print and television media, was defensive lineman Tim Hume of Cheney (PA). He registered two quarterback sacks for a loss of 16 yards and had a pair of solo hits. Faulkner's Courtney Pete and Suozzo shared the Offensive Player of the Game accolades. Taylor Basket of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke was selected the Special Teams Player of the Game after booting field goals of 32, 47 and 45 yards that boosted the Pony Express into a 9-0 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
Wes Holland of North Alabama was the game’s leading rusher, toting the pigskin seven times for 59 yards while Michael Rodriguez of Tusculum hauled in a game-high five aerials for 44 yards. Lycoming’s Anthony Marascio registered a game-high six tackles including three solo hits while West Georgia’s Will Jones recorded five tackles, three of which were unassisted. Picking off interceptions were Royel Johnson of Arkansas-Monticello and Kurt Rogers of Franklin & Marshall.

In memory of Don Hansen, the pioneer of national media coverage of small college football through his publication Football Gazette, the NCAA-compliant and NAIA-approved four-day, three-night event in Virginia Beach has been named the Hansen Bowl.

History of Small College Senior All-Star Game
USA Football All-Star Classic (1996-1999) - Hansen Bowl (2012)
Created in 1996 and played at Robeson Stadium in East Orange, NJ, the inaugural USA Football All-Star Classic was the first-ever small college senior all-star game. The 2012 Hansen Bowl combined the Cactus Bowl (NCAA D-II) with the USA Football All-Star Classic (NCAA D-III) and the first-ever NAIA senior all-star event in Virginia Beach, VA that was a four-day, three-night event.
